Re-posting from the buying advice forum (sorry for the duplicate, missed that this was here originally).

I'm looking at an upgrade path specifically for video, to improve on my cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S20 FE). After doing some looking though, it seems like the next step that would be a meaningful upgrade is immediately in the >$1000 range.

Is that to be expected, or is there a middle ground that's worth looking at? The Sony CX405 is available and seems like it might be okay, though the video from it that I've seen in a couple of YouTube samples didn't seem all that impressive. Hard to say whether that's the camera's fault...

4K would be nice but 1080p should be sufficient if good quality, and better quality audio would also be a definite thing to consider.

I have a Pentax K-1 for still photography; it also does video, though isn't really geared toward that, and it might be an option if I can practice enough at staying on top of focus manually all the time...
